Aliff Firdaus Mat Yusoff is Principal (Industrial Hygiene) at PETRONAS Chemicals Group (PCG), where he provides technical leadership in occupational health risk management across manufacturing and petrochemical operations. As an Industrial Hygiene Technical Authority, he leads the development of industrial hygiene strategies, standards, and capability-building initiatives covering chemical exposure management, hearing conservation, ergonomics, and emerging workplace health risks. With nearly 20 years of experience in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industry, Aliff is a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) and a DOSH-registered competent assessor in Chemical Health Risk Assessment, Chemical Exposure Monitoring, and Engineering Control evaluation. His professional experience spans occupational health governance, exposure assessment, process hazard analysis, incident investigation, and industrial hygiene programme development. Beyond his corporate role, Aliff serves as Honorary Treasurer of the Malaysian Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA). He has contributed to SME compliance initiatives, regulatory awareness efforts following the OSHA 1994 amendments, and the development of future industrial hygiene professionals through university engagement. He holds degrees from University of Malaya and Universiti Putra Malaysia and is a recipient of the MIHA Young Hygienist Award.

Mr George Yeoh is a Specialist (Occupational Hygiene) at Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower, where he sits at the intersection of regulatory work and frontline practice. He advises industry on chemical, noise, heat stress, confined space safety, and medical surveillance — and has responded directly to workplace incidents across all these domains. Before joining MOM, he worked as an engineer at Applied Materials, maintaining and optimising the tools used to manufacture the latest memory chips at Micron, giving him rare, hands-on insight into the complex safety risks of advanced manufacturing environments that underpin today’s AI revolution. In this conference, George will be sharing MOM’s outcome-focused Enhanced Workplace Health Surveillance (WHS+) framework.

Designing Workplaces That Work for People: From Data, Space, and Behaviour to Psychological and Social Wellbeing

This panel explores how workplace environments shape psychological and social health, and how emerging approaches in neuroscience, data analytics, architecture, and social psychology can be integrated to design better work experiences. As organisations continue to adopt hybrid work models, AI-enabled systems, and data-driven workplace strategies, there is an urgent need to understand not only how spaces are used, but how they affect human cognition, wellbeing, and social connection. Bringing together perspectives from neuroarchitecture, smart building analytics, workplace design practice, and social psychology, the panel will examine how physical environments and digital sensing technologies can be combined with human-centred design principles to create workplaces that are both measurable and meaningful. Clayton Miller is an Associate Professor of Urban Analytics based at Singapore Management University (SMU) in the College of Integrative Studies (CIS). His research focuses on characterizing human experiences in both indoor and outdoor environments, particularly in relation to comfort, health, and productivity, through the convergence of architecture, engineering, data science, and human-computer interaction. Dr. Miller’s team leads the development of the open-source smartwatch-based Cozie wellness and comfort data collection project, as well as the ASHRAE Great Energy Predictor III and Cool, Quiet City Kaggle competitions, and the SpaceMatch activity-based workstation optimization platform. He is the creator of the YouTube online course titled “Data Science for Construction, Architecture, and Engineering,” which was formerly an edX course with over 43,000 participants worldwide.

Lara is a Postdoctoral Researcher and Module Coordinator for the Architectural Cognition in Practice group at Future Cities Lab Global, Singapore- ETH Centre. Her research focuses on empirically understanding how properties of the built environment impact cognition, behaviour and emotion, and explores how this research can be translated into design practice. This involves running research collaborations with industry partners to study real-world spaces, and translating findings into design outcomes. Prior to that, Lara gained her PhD from UCL’s Spatial Cognition Lab, in which she sought to bridge the worlds of Spatial Cognition and Neuroarchitecture by exploring architectural experience as a combination of spatial, aesthetic and affective processing through fMRI-neuroimaging studies, combining neural, behavioural and subjective responses. She also obtained an MSc in Health, Wellbeing and Sustainable Buildings from The Bartlett, UCL.

Dr Eun Hee Lee is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Nottingham Malaysia. She has led projects on underground workspaces, climate action, digital literacy, and human responses to environmental risk. Practising AI Ethically in Occupational Hygiene
Session Description
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a fantastic productivity tool. It has delivered immense productivity gains, reduced the knowledge gap, and enabled users to create bespoke tools to enhance their work. These benefits include drafting reports, cleaning up language, speeding calculations, and building models such as noise and exposure maps. But when something seems too good to be true – what’s the catch? This presentation takes a balanced, evidence-based look at practising AI ethically in occupational hygiene, using the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) Code of Ethics as its anchor. It compares peer-reviewed studies of AI’s benefits against evidence of bias and skill erosion, while taking into account aspects of IOHA’s Code of Ethics that all occupational hygienists should abide by, or at least their member organisation’s version of it. It is hoped that attendees will leave able to harness AI’s gains without compromising their professional integrity.

Kerry Cheung’s passion for occupational hygiene grew from his early research work at the Centre for Public Health Research, Massey University, where his hands-on approach brought him close with workers and the hazardous environments they navigated every day. That experience has driven a people-centred commitment to the profession spanning nearly two decades. From the healthcare sector in Canada to consulting across the Asia-Pacific, Kerry now serves as Principal Advisor Occupational Health at WorkSafe New Zealand, where he designs interventions to reduce worker illness and disease. He is a Certified Occupational Hygienist (COH)® and holds a Master of Work Health and Safety (Occupational Hygiene). Giving back to the profession, Kerry also volunteers as President-Elect of the International Occupational Hygiene Association (IOHA) and Secretary of the New Zealand Occupational Hygiene Society (NZOHS), where his focus is on raising the profile of the profession and strengthening professional standards globally.

He is a Senior Lecturer at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), where he teaches and conducts research on human–system interactions, ergonomics in design, and workplace safety. Dr. Radin Zaid has over 17 years of experience in ergonomics research and industry projects across Malaysia, the United States, Indonesia, and South Korea. The assessment of biomechanical risk associated with repetitive upper-limb tasks is one of the most time-consuming activities in occupational ergonomics. Established ergonomic assessment methods provide scientifically validated frameworks for evaluating exposure, but their application requires detailed task observation, manual action counting, posture analysis, force estimation and extensive documentation. Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Vision and Human Pose Estimation offer new opportunities to support ergonomists throughout this process. Rather than replacing established ergonomic methodologies, AI can automate repetitive and low-value tasks such as video segmentation, technical action counting, posture recognition and preliminary data organization, allowing professionals to focus on interpretation, validation and risk management. This presentation explores how AI can be integrated into repetitive task risk assessment workflows, highlighting both its current capabilities and its limitations. Practical examples will demonstrate how AI-assisted analysis can reduce assessment time, improve data consistency and facilitate the identification of critical workstations, while maintaining the ergonomist’s central role in professional judgement and final decision-making.

Yogesh is a human factors and ergonomics specialist with over 20 years of experience in physical ergonomics, cognitive ergonomics, and human-computer interaction. He has advised leading global organisations including Apple, Meta, Google, ExxonMobil, Microsoft, Dell, Intel, Sony, Samsung, and British Petroleum on workplace ergonomics, safety, and user-centred design. Throughout his career, Yogesh has led more than 700 consulting projects across diverse industries, including defence, manufacturing, oil and gas, banking, healthcare, logistics, telecommunications, retail, and hospitality. He has also delivered over 250 training programmes and seminars in Singapore and internationally on human factors and ergonomics. A former President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society of Singapore (HFESS), Yogesh has contributed to numerous government initiatives and international conferences. He has also served as a visiting faculty member at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), and other educational institutions. Yogesh holds a Master’s degree in Human Factors Engineering from Nanyang Technological University, a Certificate in Human-Computer Interaction from Stanford University, and an Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP) from the Institute for Adult Learning, Singapore.

His professional background includes 5 years of service in the Army and current service in the Digital Intelligence Service as a Senior System Analyst, alongside 20 years of experience in environmental, health, and safety consulting and education. Alvian Tan is an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), where he teaches graduate courses in industrial hygiene and epidemiology under the Master of Science in Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) programme. He also mentors postgraduate students in their academic research. Professionally, Alvian serves as Senior Assistant Director in the Major Hazards Department, Occupational Safety and Health Division, Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Singapore. He leads a multidisciplinary team in implementing Singapore’s Safety Case Regime, aimed at preventing catastrophic incidents at Major Hazard Installations. His extensive experience spans occupational health policy development, specialist enforcement, applied research, and international collaborations. Alvian holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical) and a Master of Science in SHE Technology from NUS, as well as a Master of Public Health from Harvard University. He holds a PhD in Biomedicine (Public Health, Occupational Safety and Health) from Management & Science University and represents the International Medical University (IMU), Malaysia in academic and professional engagements. Dr Fairuz has led multidisciplinary occupational health programmes across Southeast Asia, including health surveillance, ergonomic risk assessment, hygiene assessment, OSH training and psychosocial risk management aligned with global standards such as ISO 45001 and ISO 45003. He is a certified Ergonomic Trained Person and ISO 45001 Lead Auditor, with extensive experience advising industries including oil and gas, manufacturing, and healthcare. At the same time, demographic shifts, ageing populations, and increasing workforce diversity are reshaping occupational health challenges. This talk will explore the current state of research into occupational exposures and health, given these rapid changes in the nature of work. It will explore emerging risks associated with digitally enabled and platform-based work, including mental health, sedentary work, surveillance, and changing patterns of exposure. The talk will also discuss the growing importance of the “working life exposome” as a framework for understanding cumulative occupational and environmental risks, and identify future research priorities for protecting worker health in a changing world of work.

Dr. Loh is an Associate Professor at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health at the National University of Singapore. Her research has included developing methods to characterize the ‘working life exposome’ using smart technologies, indoor air quality, personal level environmental exposures, and evaluating the effectiveness of interventions such as facemask or respirator wearing to reduce air pollution exposures. She has also been part of interdisciplinary teams using creative methods for engaging stakeholders and the public on environment and health issues.
